Waerenga-o-Kuri history

Waerenga-O-Kuri School - Primary

Who are we? Where are we?

We are a small rural school with 27 students from Year 1 to Year 8, in two classrooms - junior and senior. Our school is about 25 minutes south west of Gisborne city and 350 metres above sea level. Our district is all farming with mostly sheep and cattle with some deer. There is also a quarry near the school. Our school is the only one in the whole district as three others have closed over the past 50 years. The last school that closed was Hangaroa. When it closed most of the pupils and a prefab classroom came to our school. In the next few years Waerenga-O-Kuri School was completely remodelled. Then in 2008 a new library was added. Now our school has bright classrooms, a computer suite, a new library, and loads of modern equipment and resources. Across the road from the school is our wonderful country store, with the well used local hall only 300 metres down the road.
