Khandallah history preserved for 100 years

Check out the Khandallah Street Names Living Heritage story to find out about this. A team of seven students from Cashmere Avenue Primary School, Wellington spent several months researching their local history (including during their school holidays) about the history of street names in Khandallah.

Library Launch

The Cashmere Avenue students invited family, friends and dignitaries to the launch of their website at their local library in Khandallah. Here they shared the researching and developing of their Living Heritage story.

Lily, one of the student researchers, said they had learned a lot about the history of Khandallah. “We have learned about the people who used to live in our suburb over 100 years ago and how we came to have so many Indian street names.”

Anne Maree Breen, the teacher in charge of the Living Heritage project at Cashmere Avenue School, said that the students found the project especially exciting because it was about the history of their own community and because they could use technology to present the results of their research on the web.

The librarians at the Khandallah Library discovered a book called The Streets Of My City written by F.L. Irvine-Smith and published in 1948 by A. H. and A. W. Reed. This, and a photo of the author were valuable sources of information.

Representatives from the Onslow Historical Society also attended the launch and commented how pleased they were to have assisted with the project.

Launching your story

We would like to encourage other schools to celebrate the launch of their stories online by holding a public event at their local library, too. We will send you a launch pack which will help guide you through this process as we did for Cashmere Avenue School.

Just remember support is only an email or telephone call away. If you would like any help at any stage in your projects, please contact us. We enjoy working with schools and are always happy to help. New stories are always welcome. Go to Participate on the Living Heritage website for information and how to register.

Best wishes
