Life Member, Player, and Referee
Mr Cleland started off as the Secretary of the North Otago Rugby Union. He did that for 30 years. After playing rugby, he started refereeing for the junior rugby then senior, then representive level. He then got appointed to referee at national level. Dick got to control an Irish and French game, and is still refereeing North Otago games.
After all that hard work, Mr Cleland got nominated by the Referees' Association. It then went to the Board to get approval. Soon after he went to an anual meeting where all of the clubs voted on it. He then got presented a Life Member badge. Now he gets invited to games and rugby functions for free.
When Mr Cleland used to play rugby it was more of a fun game, but now it is a full-time job for some players 12 months of the year.
