Life at
Sea

When a penguin
reaches the age
of around 5 weeks,
it will go to sea
for 4-5 months.
In this time it
eats, sleeps, and
fishes at sea.

After this time
the penguin will
return to land to
moult, which is a
very stressful
time for the
penguin.

After spending these months at sea the penguin is ready to come to land and start a family of it's own.

Although the penguins spend most of their time at sea there are many perils when the penguins swim near
the coast. Sea lions, leopard seals, sharks and orcas/killer whales are among the greatest predators of the Little Blue penguins. Fortunately for our colony here in Oamaru these are uncommon. Some of the risks in the urban areas of course though, are cars, trains, dogs, and people.
