Protecting Rowi

To prevent chick predation, Department of Conservation staff transfer kiwi chicks to Motuara Island in the Marlborough Sounds.

Motuara Island is a predator-free island. Because of this it's a haven for native wildlife.

The island has been chosen as the nursery ground for kiwi chicks as it is rich with food and is large enough to accommodate all of the new chicks.

The chicks are brought into captivity at a few days old and are hand-reared before transfer to Motuara Island.

They quickly adapt to the new environment and rapidly gain weight. After approximately one year they are transferred back to South Okarito Forest.

While this transfer process is effective in protecting individual chicks, other chicks that hatch and remain in the wild with their parents are still highly vulnerable to predation.
