Don’t take dogs into South Okarito Forest, either for hunting or recreation. Dogs are the biggest threat to adult kiwi.

In other areas, if you take a dog into the bush, keep it under close control.

At night, keep dogs indoors or tied up.

If you lose a dog in the bush or see one unattended, please tell the DOC staff at the Franz Josef Waiau  Office.

Don’t release unwanted cats or dogs into the bush.

If you live near South Okarito Forest, set possum traps at least 70cm above the ground and set stoat traps in tunnels that extend at least 30cm beyond each end, with entrance holes no larger than 60 mm.  Contact the DOC staff at the Franz Josef Waiau Area Office for advice.

If you live near South Okarito Forest and are keen to trap stoats or possums on your property, please get in contact with the DOC staff at the Franz Josef Waiau Area Office for advice.

Please drive slowly and carefully down the road to Okarito at night – a number of Rowi have been hit here, and 5 killed.

If you see kiwi anywhere at all in South Westland, please tell the DOC staff at the Franz Josef Waiau  Office.
