Te Kiri o Hinekai THE HONEYMOON POOL |

| In the olden days when the warriors came out of battles, they used to bathe in the waters of Te Kiri o Hinekai because the minerals in the water healed their bodies. | ||||||||||||
|
I think the pool was found by the Maori people and their tribes. |

In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the pool was used by visitors from all over the world as a soothing and healing bathing spa. |

In the 1930s the pool was owned by Wairakei Hotel and you had to pay to get in. You bought your ticket at the store and went in. The pool had been dammed to make it wider and deeper by then. |

|
The pool became dried up because the power station was getting built. This happened in the 1960s. The stream was diverted (sent another way). The pool got all dirty. It filled up with leaves and rubbish instead of water.
