In 1996, Contact Energy got together with Mr Jim Hill from the Ngati Tuwharetoa tribe and talked to Netcor about restoring Te Kiri o Hinekai. They began work and had to take 22 truck-loads of rubbish away to clean up the pool. In 2000, the thermal waters began to run along the stream again and into Te Kiri o Hinekai.
