Matilda Lo Keong

Born in 1854 in Baoan county near Hong Kong, Matilda died in 1915
Interesting Fact:She was the first Chinese female to migrate to New Zealand.

 

Benjamin Wong Tape
Born in 1875 in Dunedin, Benjamin died in 1967
Interesting Fact: In 1925 he was appointed a justice of the peace.

 

Jim Shum
Born in 1853 in Shui Lek in Panyu, Jim died in 1914
Interesting Fact: Shum chose Jim to be his name because it sounded like his Chinese name, Chim.

 

We were very interested in the different reasons Chinese people came to New Zealand, and reading about Chinese people's lives is helping us understand.
