Why Chinese people came and continue to come to Otago
|
Early Migration The Otago Provincial Council invited Chinese men who were mining in Australia to mine in Otago. Unlike the European men, Chinese men were hardworking, honest and patient people with a great attitude. One reason immigration slowed down during the 1940s was because you couldn't travel to or from China. Their Emperor made it illegal. Some Chinese people called Otago the "New Gold Hill" because they had mined in Australia. So it was a new hill full of gold. The Chinese people came from Guangdong in south east China. |

More Recent Times
Between 1986 and 1998 the New Zealand government was encouraging Chinese immigration so Chinese people could work in small shops. Another thing that draws Chinese people to Otago is education, especially the medical school at Otago University. The education was really good, just the same as today, perfect and nice with great teachers. |
