Drivers on the Train Tracks.

A Interview with Mr. O'Donald.

This is the old train tracks.

Train tracks at Waiareka.

Two people are needed to operate a train -  a driver and a fireman to put the coal in the engine.  A driver drove the train and he had help from a fireman whose job it was to shovel coal into a big furnace. This made the water in the boiler boil to produce steam to make the train go.  It used to take about 10 minutes to load the engine with coal in Oamaru before traveling to Ngapara.  The train drivers had to load the coal onto the engine themselves.
