The old Ngapara Flour Mill

Milligan's Eclipse Flour Mill was founded in 1898.

The most flour mined in one year at the Ngapara Flour Mill was 5000 tonnes. This was put in bags and stacked in LA type wagons.

The Mill.

The wagons went into the Mill to be loaded.  They had no difficulties loading the flour.

Up until 1970 they had to send all freight by rail if it was going more than 6km. That was the law!

Most of the wheat they used came from around North Otago and still does.  They imported some wheat from Australia.  Imported wheat was put in an LA type wagon and the door was taped to reduce spillage.  They put the wheat into sacks at the Mill to use later.

This is a picture of a wagon.  This is what they used to cart flour.

Once there were two rails going in to the big red doors of the Flour Mill

From the Ngapara Mill, flour was sent all over New Zealand.  If it was going to the North Island, it was carted by ship from the Port of Oamaru.  The wagons were put alongside the ship they were to be loaded on.
