" E tipu e rea, mō ngā rā o tou ao;
ko tō ringā ki ngā rākau a te Pākehā hei ara mō tō tinana,
ko tō ngākau ki ngā taonga a ō tūpuna Māori hei tiktiki mō tō māhunga ;
ko tō wairua ki te Atua nāna nei ngā mea katoa ".
Tā Apirana Ngata

Te Whānau o te Kākano (a rumaki Māori class) was established in 1990 to cater for the graduates of our local kohanga reo. The first kaiako in Te Whānau o te Kākano were Papa Pat Waiari who has now passed on, Papa Ruia Aperahama and kaiawhina Nanny Mere Noema who has also passed on. Our main kaupapa was strengthening te reo Māori me ona tikanga. All lessons are delivered in te reo Māori. We integrate the marautanga ki te ao Māori, this is so that our language will survive for many years to come.

Ko Whitireia te maunga
Ko Porirua te awa
Ko Tainui te waka
Ko Ngati Toa te iwi
Ko Takapuwahia te marae
Ko Te Rauparaha te tangata.
