Home-Our school

This Project

Kia orana,

Our names are Mana and Junior and we are here with Barbara and Eric from the New Zealand Living Heritage website and they gave us some information about the project in the Cook Islands.

Kia Ora,

As you read in the introduction, we are part of the Living Heritage project on the internet. Schools identify a heritage resource in their local community and write a story about it, take pictures of it and interview people. We came to the Cook Islands to help schools preserve their history. In 100 years time, future generations will be able to look back and see how children at this time viewed their world. We have visited many schools in New Zealand and they all have a wonderful history.

UNESCO has sponsored Living Heritage in the Pacific. It was decided to start the project in the Cook Islands so we gave Te Uki Ou School in Rarotonga a call to see if they would like to participate in the program. They agreed and the year 7 and 8s got to work, searching for the history of their school, their preschool and other interesting parts of their past. On Friday the 14th of May 2010 we visited the school to see how they were handling the project.

They have done well for two weeks of work and we hope that they can store more information about their school in the archives. We hope that we can visit many more schools and save their history for the future.
