Lake Waihora

Opening the Lake

Opening Lake Waihora to the Sea

Water comes into the lake from creeks and rivers, rainfall and ground water seepage.

If the lake is not opened, it can rise to four metres above sea level. This would flood the land around the lake including Gebbie valley and Taitapu.

To stop the lake level rising too high they open the lake three times a year.

Dragline and bulldozers are used to open the lake. The people who own the land Around the lake and Environment Canterbury pay 50% each for opening the lake.
