Tiritiri Matangi Island

Research process

helicopter

Little spotted kiwis arriving by helicopter.

  1. The year 6 students in our school visited Tiritiri Matangi and asked the volunteers about how Tiritiri Matangi first started, its history, birds and how they're helping the birds.
  2. Then our team brainstormed all our existing knowledge.
  3. We put what we knew into questions.
  4. In groups, we searched the internet for more information.
  5. Next we got information out of a book called The Singing Island. (The authors are the grandparents of one of our classmates.)
  6. We then had to get permission to put a painting we found onto the website, so we drafted what we were going to say to the artist and then rang him.
  7. Then the team learned how to use the school scanner and how to put the information onto our Living Heritage website.

Skills involved:

  • brainstorming knowledge
  • group work
  • visiting and making websites
  • locating information in the book 'The Singing Island'
  • writing, sending and receiving emails
  • talking to volunteers on Tiritiri Matangi Island
  • using the computers and scanner
