Farm land and machinery

Farming machinery has changed since the 1950s and 1960s. Now it is better, stronger and bigger. This report is about farming machinery used in the Totara district in the 1950s

Types of Machinery

Some of the machinery, which was used in the Totara district, were the plough, tractors and cultivators. The plough was used for turning over the soil. The tractors were used for towing.

 

Different Types of Farming

In the 1950's veggie growing was very popular. Most people were Chinese in the Totara district. They were veggie growers. They also used sheep and cattle farming around the Totara district. Sheep were used for wool and meat and cattle were used for milk and cream.

 

Transporting animals   

Animals in the 1950s were transported by truck and trailer. The truck and trailer could carry 100 sheep. Sometimes the animals were shifted by the drover and his dog.
