Our street names

Some of our streets are named after landowners.

Mason Ave

There was a family that lived behind Mason Ave. Their last name is Mason and they owned a very huge part of land. They had a farm and named it Masons Farm because it was a family business. Years pasted and the farm was no longer there because they subdivided the land and sold the sections. They named the street Mason Avenue.

Massey Street

Massey Street is the same, there was a farm there too and it was owned by the Massey family, again they subdivided the land and sold the sections and they named the street Massey Street

Snowden Ave

Snowden Ave was also a farm, it was named after a lady who married a Mr Nisbet. She was a Miss Snowden from Kaeo. The Nisbet family owned most of the land from the shops to turntable and to Otiria Road. When they subdivided the land and sold the sections, they named the street Snowden Ave.

Nisbet Street

Nisbet Street was named after Minnie Nisbet, at one time the Nisbet’s owned most of the land from the shops to Turn-table Hill. When they subdivided the land they named this street after Minnie Nisbet.

Some of our street names are named after prominent people who lived in the community

Sir James Henare is a tupuna of many of the tamariki in our school. He was a prominent Maori leader. He is a scholar, war hero, councilor and kaumatua. He was a founder of Te Kohanga Reo and helped with Treaty claims. He lived in our area - Kawiti and Motatau.

Leaity Street

George Leaity was the first manager of Auckland Farmers Freezing Co–operation and they named the street after him as he was a prominent person in our community at that time.

George Street

George Road was named after King George Leaity.

Station Road

Station Road was named this because there was a station behind the dairy factory. Then the station was moved to the Otiria club rooms and it was called the Tilly lamp. Later it was moved to Davey Ngawati farm.
