Paddy the wanderer

Island Bay School - Primary

If you come to Wellington and visit Queens Wharf you will see a memorial to Paddy the Wanderer.

Paddy was a ginger and brown Airedale terrier who lived in Wellington in the 1930s. He was known by everyone and had many friends. He often rode in taxis and on the trams. Paddy lived on the wharves where he was the assistant night watchman and rat catcher. Sometimes he went with sailors to other parts of New Zealand and even to Sydney in Australia but always came back to Wellington.

You can find out more about Paddy the Wanderer in our website and what Wellington was like in the 1930s.
