Get a Life!
Mangrove life cycle

Adult mangroves grow in sheltered beaches with a muddy shore (like Shoal Bay, in Takapuna, Auckland).  They grow in big groups called mangrove forests.  There is only one type of mangrove in New Zealand, the Avicennia marina.
Mangrove trees have small yellow flowers (that smell sweet) in the months from February to April.
The flowers don’t make seeds like other plants. The mangrove makes young mangroves, called propagules. The propagules grow on the mangrove tree for most of the year.

The propagules fall from the tree about Christmas time and can float a long way.  If they find a good muddy place, they are ready to take root quickly in between tides.
