Our Place
Mangrove habitat
Protective shell bank
The mangrove can only survive in sheltered places where the tide comes in and out. It grows in thick mud which is a strange place for a plant to live When you scrape the top of the mud it is black underneath. The mud contains lots of food for the plant. The mud is very waterlogged. In the past mangroves grew around Gisborne as well. Now the mangroves do not grow further south than Rotorua.

Low Tide
High Tide
On the open harbour side, these mangroves are thinner and some have died.
Healthy mangroves all rafted together on the sheltered side… no big waves can bother them.
