Birds in Kakanui

The penguin colony is in Kakanui at the river mouth. Penguins spend most of their time out in the sea. They only come to land at night to sleep or when they're moulting or nesting.

On the estuaries and river along the Coast Road you can see a variety of ducks including New Zealand Scaup, New Zealand Shoveller, Mallard, Paradise Shelduck.

Seagulls live in flocks so they have to get along with each other. They don't really hurt each other.

This bird is called a shag. They are often seen along the Kakanui River.
