The Anderson Family.

By Logan Searle (a descendent from the Andersons) and James McNicol

When we went to the cemetery we noticed that there were a lot of Andersons buried at the cemetery. We decided to focus our enquiry on the Andersons because:

  1. There were a few kids at the school that are their descendents;
  2. We could find information from those families
  3. We also found info from some of the graves at the cemetery
Headstone.

The Andersons came from Glasgow in Scotland and arrived in 1854. There have been 5 generations of Andersons before Pile and then Searle. They lived at Herbert in a house that is now a workshop for a local man.

Although an Andersons donated the land for the Herbert cemetery not all of the Andersons were buried at the cemetery.

These are some of the first Andersons to arrive in Herbert.

Alexander Anderson

Alexander Anderson was the first Anderson to come to New Zealand.

He was the brother of Adam Anderson who was the second Anderson to come to New Zealand.

Adam Anderson

Adam Anderson was the first Anderson to own his own land in North Otago.

He also donated the land for the Herbert Presbyterian church and the Herbert cemetery. He shifted the first Otepopo School to re-build his home at Mary Hill.

John/Jock Anderson

Jock was the last of the Andersons. Jock was the brother of Carrie and Stella.
