Issue 21: May 2008

Kia ora and welcome to the second 2008 issue of the Living Heritage newsletter.

New Projects on Living Heritage

Congratulations to all schools that have recently finished their websites!

Check out what’s new…

Endangered Species and Important Places

The Northcote Intermediate School's Living Heritage project explores endangered species, looking at their habitats, human impact, food chains and life cycles. They also looked into all the amazing national parks around New Zealand and what they have to offer. The website has stories and videos which show their learning.

From Brown to Green

Omarama School is in the Mackenzie Basin which is an area continuing to change because of the farmers irrigating their land. In their Living Heritage project, students in the senior room explored how this has been happening over the last few decades and the junior room students shared some information on what happens on the farms in the Omarama area.

The Mahana Whakapapa

The Mahana School project explores the story of their community and the wider society through an historical timeline. Mahana is a small community which is changing fast and they wanted to promote a sense of belonging and pride in their past and present, and optimism for the future.

Our Story, Our Place: Upper Moutere

The students of Upper Moutere School wanted to develop inquiry learning within their school. The 150th Jubilee Celebration was selected as the focus of their whole school inquiry learning project. Explore their website and take a journey to discover the history of the Upper Moutere area, the school and the people.

Discover Tasman: The Tasbay Rocky Shore

Explore this Living Heritage website to discover what Mapaua School students learnt about the McKee Domain Reserve at Ruby Bay in Nelson. As part of the 'Discover IT Tasman' ICT cluster's goals, Mapua School completed an inquiry unit following the Living Heritage project path.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The senior students at Mapua School identified four important environmental issues in their community. Through the inquiry learning process and the Living Heritage project they discovered many interesting facts about their local area and researched how to reduce their carbon footprint.

Welcome to all the new registrations

A very warm welcome to all of you who have recently registered new projects with Living Heritage. We're always looking for exciting additions to the site, and it would be great to showcase your projects. Please get in contact if you have any ideas or queries – we'd love to hear from you!

Living Heritage Day

As part of LIANZA’s Library Week, we will be celebrating Living Heritage Day on 21 August. Libraries are encouraged to connect with their local schools on Living Heritage Day to help them share their projects with the local community. We encourage you to get in touch with your local library and organise an event, to celebrate your Living Heritage projects. We are hoping to organise an event in Wellington, showcasing some projects created by Wellington schools. We will be sending out more information and activity ideas closer to the time, but please feel free to contact us if you have any initial questions.
