Mapua - The good, the bad, and the ugly

Carbon Footprint

Hot topics: carbon footprint, global warming, R.R.R.

Our project began with us looking at the Carbon Footprint of Mapua School and community. We wanted to help reduce the waste, electricity, pollution and water usage of the school. So first of all, we had to do some research!

What is Carbon Footprint?

A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact human activities have on the environment, in terms of the amount of green house gases produced. Travel needs and electricity demands are the biggest contributors to your carbon footprint.

Following on from this we started to ask heaps of questions…

  • Are the people of Mapua doing anything to try to reduce their carbon footprint?
  • What can we do in order to contribute to a healthier environment?
  • What areas might we need to improve on - as a school, and as a community?

We started to think of all the different ways that the Mapua community might be able to effect change. We came up with four different areas to research with regard to these.

This lead us to our BIG question…

How have TRANSPORT, ARCHITECTURE, ENERGY SOURCES, and RECYCLING impacted on the Mapua Community in the PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE???
