Sheep and Beef Farming

Cropping

Irrigation has changed the way the land can be farmed for beef and sheep farming because it has made the land able to grow good grass to feed the stock.

Cropping was popular in the Haka Valley in the early 20th century because of the rich soil and the good climate. There has been a big change from cropping to sheep and beef farming because of the climate change and the cost of quality machinery.

Dairying

The land use in the Waitaki Valley has changed from sheep farming to dairying. Dairy farmers farm the land more intensively using fertilizers and irrigation.
