OUR INTERVIEW WITH MRS CRAIG, KUROWS OLDEST RESIDENT

The Changing Face Of Kurow

Kurow has changed over the years. There are more farms and the animals have increased as the farms have got bigger. In the early days there were mainly sheep on the farms then in the early 20th century dairy cows started coming in the Otiake area. There was a dairy factory outside of Oamaru Anna Craig used to go with her father when she was a small girl on a horse and cart to supply milk to the workers at the Waitaki Dam.

Before they did this they had to milk the cows by hand imagine that on a cold frosty morning. The government had decided to build this dam to give people employment during the depression and there were hundreds of people living at Lake Waitaki.
