TRANSPORT IN THE WAITAKI VALLEY

THE TRAINS

Trains started running from Oamaru to Kurow in 1881. They took up 42 miles by 10m wide. The government owned the land but later farms were split up and the tracks had to be fenced. There were train stations in Kurow, Duntroon and a turn around spot in Hakataramea which stopped in 1930. All the trains stopped in 1970.

RURAL TRANSPORT

In the early 1940s Columns transport began in Kurow. This became Waitaki transport and now we have rural transport. Before this farmers used bullock teams and horse and dray. The trucks in the Waitaki Valley are used for wool, sheep, cattle and general cartage.
