Now a days the Kakanui river mouth is used for swimming, fishing, white baiting or storing boats. It's a great place to take a walk. Right beside the river mouth is the Kakanui penguin colony so you can take a relaxing walk along the river then watch the penguins come in (but people have to have all dogs on leads when around the colony)

The river mouth is always changing. Sometimes it's wide and sometimes it's so skinny you can walk across to the beach on the other side!!!!
