AT WORK IN EARLY CANTERBURY

We looked at the jobs people in each class might have done. We chose a different job for each Class of people to study.

We used the Questioning Matrix to come up with some research questions.

Lower Class

Q. What work did they do?
A. The pick-pockets ran around and stole money, watches, jewelley, wallets and anything else in people's pockets.

Q. How did they do their work?
A. By pushing someone over and taking a wallet from their pocket, by tricking people into helping them, or by creating a diversion - making the person think of another thing.

Q. Where did pick-pockets work?
A. In the streets, at the markets, and out in the open where there were lots of other people.

Q. Who did they work for?
A. For their families to get money or for someone else who paid them to do it

Q. When did they go to work?
A. Pick-pockets worked in the morning when people were going to work, or at teatime when people were going home, and at the weekends when people were out.

Q. Why did they do this work?
A. They were poor and they had to steal to get things for their families.

Q. What did other people do for jobs ?
A. The lower class would go into tunnels and dig for coal.

They also might have worked in factories. The young delivered papers and some were pick-pockets. Other people were maids or servants for upper class families. Some were hard-working farmers.

Q. How did they feel working in factories, tunnels and other hard jobs?
A. They might have felt tired and sad, or they may have been happy to earn money.

Middle Class

Q. What work did they do?
A. Taught children how to read and write, how to spell and do their maths. They taught children their manners and gave the children the cane or strap if they were naughty .

Q. How did they get to work?
A. They walked, or cycled or went by horse, or in a horse and carriage.

Q. Who did they work for?
A. Upper class bank owners.

Q. Where did they work?
A. They worked in a school with one or two teachers.

Q. When did they go to work?
A. They got there at 6:00-6:30am to light the fire.

Q. Why did they do this work?
A. To get money.They were paid poorly.

Upper Class

Upper class - bankers:

Q. What work did they do?
A. He did nothing. He was lazy fat and mean to his staff.

Q. How did they get to work?
A. In a horse and carriage or horse and cart.

Q. Who did they get to work?
A. Himself.

Q. Where did they work?
A. At the bank or at home.

Q. When did they go to work?
A. Later in the day to check on his workers.

Q. Why did they do this work ?
A. He had lots of money and he lent it to others.
