Fire engines are actually called fire appliances. There is only one fire appliance at Newlands Fire Service because they are very expensive to buy.

There are special mechanics to fix it if it breaks down. There are six seats in the cab and once there are four people there the appliance can zoom off to the call out. There is a lot of equipment for different emergencies. The appliance makes smoke when it starts up.

Some examples of the equipment are:

• fold down cones which they pull up when they get to the incident
• breathing apparatus
• 15! hoses
• a first aid kit
• a ladder
• storm damage tool kit
• an electric saw (which can be used to cut people out of cars)
• water tank
• tool box
