Newlands Volunteer Fire Service

History

Why was a station developed?

Long ago Newlands had lots of gorse and there were not many people living here. There were lots of gorse fires. The nearest fire service was in Johnsonville and people wanted fires to be put out more quickly.

At the start fire fighters used sheds for their equipment and then in 1965 an official Volunteer Fire Service was made. The Brigade responded to fires in. . . Karori, Porirua, Strathmore and Newlands and lots more suburbs.
